To Wire or Not to Wire

To Wire or Not to Wire…

When it comes to keeping your company connected to the web you’ve got two options: a wired network that uses Ethernet cords or a wireless network that relies on radio frequencies to broadcast the Internet.

There are pros and cons to each:

Wired Pros:

Wired network are faster, more reliable, and more secure. Since the Ethernet cord connects your device directly to the router, you don’t have to worry about physical signal obstructions due to the quirks of your office space. Wired networks are less vulnerable to fluctuations in speed from internet service provider limitations or heavy use by multiple devices. They are also less likely to allow intruders to access your signal.

Wired Cons:

Lack of mobility. The Ethernet cord keeps devices tethered to the router, hindering your ability to move freely. Also, many modern gadgets, including smartphones and tablets, can’t connect directly to Ethernet cords.

Wireless Pros:

Mobility and easy setup are the hallmarks of a wireless connection. It’s great for collaboration – allowing

team members to share information from any device, anywhere.

Wireless Cons:

Wireless connections are more vulnerable to signal interruptions from intruders and physical obstructions. If you’ve got an open office plan with plenty of room for the signal to travel, great. But, if you’re in an older building, the heavy plumbing, thick walls, and other architectural impediments can block the signal. Many businesses go with a hybrid system – using wired connections for immobile desktop connections while making Wi-Fi available for portable devices. If you already have a hybrid setup and are curious which network is performing faster, put your connections to the test at sites like MegaPath.
