Disaster recovery
Disaster recovery with targets agreed in writing
If your office, server room or main systems are lost, your key servers are brought back up in AustinCloud, our private cloud in Perth data centres. Systems that must be back fast are replicated. Everything else is restored from backup. How fast each one returns is agreed with you up front.

01Where it goes wrong
Backups, but no way back to work
Most businesses have backups. Far fewer know how long it would take to work from them. These are the gaps we see most.
No agreed time to be back
Nobody has written down how long each system can be down, so nobody knows if the backup is good enough.
Nowhere to run it
The data is safe, but the server it ran on is gone, and replacement hardware takes weeks to arrive.
One person knows how
Recovery lives in one engineer's head. If they are away, the business waits.
The wrong order
Systems come back in whatever order is easiest, not the order the business needs them.
Ransomware reached the backups
Backups on the same network were encrypted too. See cloud backup for copies that cannot be deleted.
Clients and insurers are asking
Tenders, contracts and insurance renewals ask for recovery targets you cannot yet show.
02Two ways to recover
Replication for what cannot wait, restore for the rest
Each system gets the level that matches what it costs your business to be without it.
| Compared | Replication | Restore |
|---|---|---|
| Suits | Systems the business stops without, such as practice management, finance or job systems | Systems that can wait, such as archives, test servers and less used applications |
| How it works | A copy of each server is kept up to date in AustinCloud, ready to bring up | Backups are restored into AustinCloud when you need them |
| Time to recover | The fastest option, to the recovery time agreed for each system | Slower, to the recovery time agreed for each system |
| Cost | Higher, because a copy is kept ready to run | Lower, because only the backup is stored |
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
Microsoft 365 already runs in Microsoft's cloud, so what it needs is Microsoft 365 backup.
03Recovery targets
Two numbers worth agreeing before anything breaks
Every system gets both, in writing, before we set anything up.
Recovery time
How long a system can be down before it hurts the business. This decides whether it is replicated or restored.
Recovery point
How much recent work you can afford to redo. This decides how often the copy is updated.
Recovery order
Which systems come back first, so people can start working again in the right sequence.

Know which systems matter most?
Tell us what your business runs on. A technical consultant will map it with you and quote replication or restore for each system.
04How it works
From a list of systems to a recovery plan
Disaster recovery starts with a business decision, not a product. We agree the targets with you, then build to meet them.
- Map
List what you run
Every server and application, who uses it and what it depends on.
- Agree
Set the targets
Recovery time, recovery point and order for each system, agreed in writing.
- Build
Protect each system
Replication or restore into AustinCloud, set up to meet the targets.
- Write down
The recovery plan
Who can call a disaster, what comes back first and how staff reach systems while they run in our cloud.
- Review
Keep it current
Targets and the plan are updated when your systems or your business change.
05On the day
When something goes wrong, everyone knows the next step
A flood, a fire, a failed server room or a cyber attack all lead to the same question: how quickly can people get back to work? With a plan agreed in advance, the answer is already written down.
Recovery starts when someone you have named says so. Your systems come back in the agreed order, your staff are told how to reach them, and when your site is ready the systems move home. If the cause is a cyber attack, our incident response team works alongside the recovery.
Agreed before you need it

07Questions
Disaster recovery questions
What owners and IT managers ask about recovery. Anything else, call 1300 787 429.
01What is the difference between backup and disaster recovery?
Backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is getting the business running again: the systems, in the right order, somewhere they can run, within a time you agreed in advance. You need both, and cloud backup is where disaster recovery starts.
02What is disaster recovery as a service?
Instead of buying and maintaining a second server room, your key systems are protected into a provider's cloud and brought up there when you need them. With us that is AustinCloud, our private cloud in Perth data centres, run by the same team that supports you every day.
03Which systems should be replicated?
The ones your business cannot run without for more than a few hours, such as practice management, finance or job systems. Everything else is usually fine on restore. It is a business decision as much as a technical one, and we make it with you system by system.
04Do we need disaster recovery for Microsoft 365?
Microsoft runs Microsoft 365 across its own data centres, so there is nothing to bring up elsewhere. What you do need is a backup of the data, because deleted or encrypted email and files are your problem, not Microsoft's. That is covered by Microsoft 365 backup.
05Where is our data kept?
In AustinCloud, our private cloud in Perth data centres, so your data stays in Australia. Where you already use Microsoft Azure, we can plan recovery there instead.
06How much does disaster recovery cost?
It is quoted per system after we map your environment with you. Replication costs more than restore because a copy is kept ready to run, so most businesses replicate a few critical systems and use restore for the rest.
07Does this replace a business continuity plan?
No. Disaster recovery brings the systems back. A business continuity plan covers the rest: who decides, how staff keep working and what you tell clients and suppliers. Our business continuity plan template is a good place to start.
