01What we migrate

What we move to the cloud

From one file server to a full on premise to cloud migration. Each workload is planned on its own, then moved in the order that keeps your business running.

/01

Servers

File, application and domain servers moved to the cloud or retired, with the server migration planned around your busiest times.

/02

Files and shared drives

Shared drives moved to SharePoint and OneDrive, with permissions cleaned up on the way. See Microsoft 365 migration.

/03

Email and calendars

Mailboxes, calendars and shared mailboxes moved from on premise Exchange, another host or another Microsoft 365 tenant.

/04

Business applications

Line of business and practice software checked with the vendor, then moved, upgraded or replaced.

/05

Sign in and devices

Accounts moved to Microsoft Entra ID with multi factor authentication, and devices managed from the cloud through Intune.

/06

Backups and archives

Old backups and archives moved or retained to meet your record keeping needs, with new cloud backups in place before cutover. See cloud backup.

02Choosing a destination

Microsoft 365, Azure or our private cloud

There is no single right cloud. This is where each type of workload usually belongs, and we confirm it for your business in the readiness review.

Where different workloads usually belong after a cloud migration
WorkloadUsually moves toWhy
Email, calendars and TeamsMicrosoft 365Built for it, with security and compliance tools built in
Team files and shared drivesSharePoint and OneDrive in Microsoft 365Access from anywhere, version history and sharing controls, with no file server to maintain
Practice and document management serversOur private cloudKeeps software that expects a Windows server running as it does today, close to your office
Applications that need to scaleMicrosoft AzurePay for what you use, with managed databases and services when you are ready for them
Older applications with strict requirementsPrivate cloud or AzureChosen with the software vendor, based on support, licensing and performance
Systems that must stay on siteHybridMachinery, local storage or slow links stay on site, joined up with the cloud

Each destination has its own page: Microsoft 365, Azure, cloud servers and hybrid infrastructure.

03Our process

How our cloud migration process works

A cloud migration plan is only as good as the discovery behind it. We spend the time up front so the move itself is quiet.

  1. Assess

    Readiness review

We map your servers, applications, data, users and dependencies, then check each application with its vendor.

  2. Plan

    Plan and fixed price

You get the target design, the order of moves, the timeline, the running costs and a fixed price quote.

  3. Pilot

    Test with a small group

A pilot group works in the new environment first, so problems are found by a few people, not everyone.

  4. Migrate

    Move and cut over

Data is copied ahead of time and the final switch happens after hours, with a rollback plan ready.

  5. Support

    Settle and hand over

We support your staff through the first days, tidy up the old systems and hand over documentation.

04Migration strategy

Cloud migration strategy in plain English

You will see these six terms in any cloud migration consulting proposal. Most business migrations use the first and the fourth.

/01

Rehost

Move a server to the cloud largely as it is. Quick and low risk, and often the first step.

/02

Replatform

Move it and make a few improvements on the way, such as a managed database or a newer operating system.

/03

Refactor

Rebuild an application to use cloud services properly. More work, but lower running costs and more flexibility later.

/04

Replace

Swap an old server for a cloud service, such as a file server for SharePoint or on premise Exchange for Microsoft 365.

/05

Retain

Keep something where it is for now, because it cannot move yet or there is no benefit in moving it.

/06

Retire

Switch off what nobody uses. Discovery often turns up a server or application that can simply go.

05During the move

Keeping your business running while we move it

The biggest risk in a migration is not the technology. It is staff who cannot work on Monday morning. So we plan the people side as carefully as the servers: who needs to know what, when their access changes and who to call if something looks different.

Every migration is backed up before cutover, tested with a pilot group and has a rollback plan. Security is set up before data moves, not after. The whole project follows our ISO 27001 certified processes.

Built into every migration

  • A full backup before cutover
  • Cutover after hours or on a weekend
  • A pilot group before everyone moves
  • A rollback plan for every step
  • Clear instructions for your staff
  • Engineers on hand the morning after

07Questions

Cloud migration questions

What owners and IT managers ask before they move to the cloud. Anything else, call 1300 787 429.

01

How long does a cloud migration take?

For a typical small or medium business with a handful of servers, four to eight weeks from design to cutover. More servers, more data or applications that need to change take longer. The readiness review gives you a timeline for your business before you commit.

02

Will there be downtime?

We plan the cutover so staff lose as little working time as possible. Data is copied ahead of time, the final switch usually happens after hours or on a weekend, a pilot group tests first and there is a rollback plan if something is not right.

03

Should we move to Microsoft 365, Azure or a private cloud?

Often a mix. Email and team files usually belong in Microsoft 365. Applications that need to scale, or that suit modern cloud services, belong in Azure. Practice and document management servers often run best in our private cloud. Anything that has to stay on site can be part of a hybrid setup.

04

What is the difference between rehosting, replatforming and refactoring?

Rehosting moves a server to the cloud largely as it is. Replatforming moves it and makes a few changes, such as a managed database. Refactoring rebuilds the application for the cloud. Most business migrations are rehosting, or replacing an old server with a cloud service.

05

Can our practice or line of business software move?

Usually yes. During the review we check each application with its vendor for cloud support, licensing and performance. Anything that needs to stay where it is gets planned around.

06

Where will our data be stored?

Our private cloud runs in Perth. For Microsoft 365 and Azure we use Australian regions wherever the service allows, and we tell you where each workload will live before anything moves.

07

How much does a cloud migration cost?

Every migration is different, so we quote a fixed price after the readiness review. The quote covers the plan, the migration and the cutover support. Ongoing running costs are set out separately so you can compare them with what you pay today. See IT project services.

08

What happens after the migration?

We look after your cloud environment day to day: monitoring, backups, security, cost reviews and support for your staff. Many clients move onto one of our managed IT plans once the migration is done.
